Down the river

Down the river

there’s dried grass

coarse as

mattress stuffing.

Boys leap

from the traffic bridge –

why aren’t they at school?

The river smells of iodine

but

looks like molten chocolate,

rippled.

Trees stand upright along

the far bank

in a row like telegraph

poles, and

the playground,

seized by terrible heat,

stands empty.
