Neighbours

1.

Living on top of each other

there’s bound to be disharmony.

Tapdancers,

lovers of loud music,

those who’ll build empty beer can walls

in their lounge room.

Once there was

a Big Foot

whose habits woke me

nightly and

I’d listen to

his toilet hisssss.

The sighs of sleeptime

flushing.

2.

Neville the Devil

and his F100

choked oil on the driveway

black as old blood,

and Christian from #5 drove

toy cars through;

sticky tyres tracking

down verandahs.

3.

The newcomers

and their domestics

slammed wallheads,

arms, broke fingers,

glass, mauled words

promises –

someone rang the poice

and she was led away,

sobbing.

4.

Sliding doors

open on the world

of aeroplane skytraffic,

train threads, shifting nightscapes,

clothes flicking dry on the lines

below. From the balcony,

there’s the river, boats

and treetops

that sway in any meagre

breeze.
